Those inane details…

Yo he ido a la peluquera

The very first thing I should clear up is the title, “I have gone to the barbers.” It’s not hard or special, but I now take every opportunity I can to express my self in spanish.

I went to the barber shop down at the corner (Of course you don’t know where that is, but does it matter?). Firstly, I would like to say it was a lot cheaper than any hair salon that I have been to in Canada. 8€ for a cut and a wash, unbelievable. Secondly you should know where my hair was at prior to this excursion:
Before the Barber Shop

So, I really felt like getting a haircut as every day we record +30℃ or more. Hair is hot and a lot of work. So when one of my co-workers said he was making an appointment and would I like to come, “Sure!” was my immediate response.

Immediately after full comprehending what I had agreed to, I shuddered. A trip to a spanish barber could result in an ultra-fashionable 80’s style mullet or (cringe) rat-tail! The 80’s have hit an unprecedented level of popularity in this country, I don’t get it. But the possibility of getting a real nasty hair cut lingered in my mind.

Moving on, I got to the barber shop and seated in a relatively comfortable chair. The conversation in the room was lively. And it looked pleasant. The barber asked me ¿Cómo quieres tu pelo? or something like it. I said ¿huh? Then I realized he wanted to know how I wanted it done. This is good, I thought, now, if only I can pull together enough spanish to express my styling desire. It didn’t take long. Muy Corto. Was my completely unrehearsed response. Anyway as the cut progressed he wanted to talk about sideburns and hair gel, two things I really didn’t want. But apparently are very spanish and fashionable. He laughed at me when I said I didn’t want them. I got laughed at a lot.

When the ordeal was all said and done, this was final result:
After the Barber Shop

I would say the best part of the whole ordeal was the really cute spanish girl who washed my hair. I might have to go again next week.

Sorry I don’t have a picture of her.

I saw the first picture and thought you’d really matured in the 2 months since you left!! The after looks more like you (although your not usually so serious). However I do look forward to the 3rd picture you may be getting!!! I had a good chuckle reading your letter. Thanks for keeping them interesting!

You look mean, Jamie! Like you’re really sad you had to lose your hair. lol

Good idea with the before & after pictures, though. Who knows what you could end up with when you and the barber speak different tongues? :)

I am really not mean/angry, I do however look forward to getting my hair back. As a minor correction the title should actually be: Yo He Ido A La Peluquero as it was a man named Bartoli who cut my hair.
