August is here and August has been weighing heavily on me so far. No, it’s not the workload, it’s the unbearable heat. The first of August greeted me and the people of southern Spain with a daytime high of 45°C and a nighttime low of merely 35°C. In spanish we say ¡Que Calor! I have been told that this year is not normal, but I have yet to be able to prod anyone into telling me what is normal. So what follows is a report of my first week in Spain in August.
The Things you Need to Know
- The Rebajas are over
- Everyone is on vacation
- It’s really hot
So right now your wondering “What’s Rebajas?” I am glad you asked. Twice a year, in February and July avery single store in Spain puts all there products on sale and hopes to sell everything. It would have been awesome if someone had told me about this before July was over, because now, if for example, you would like to buy some sandals, there are none, a fan because it’s hot, there are none. You can no longer go buy anything, but I guess I really don’t feel like buying anything because it’s hot.
Secondly, I really mean everyone is on vacation. Or maybe I think everyone is on vacation because I want to be on vacation somewhere cooler (I mean literally) like England, Sweden, or maybe Switzerland. I mean I am going to Switzerland next week because I didn’t want to be the only person left here in Spain. Really, everyone I work with and everyone I that know in Spain is going to be somewhere far away for a good part of this month.
And thirdly, I don’t know if I said this before, but it’s hot. It’s hotter than the temperature of the human body, sometimes even at night! The heat feels heavy, when you walk outside it’s almost as if there is a weight on your shoulders. You can’t help but sweat and everyone who is here at work and not on vacation has moved their desk into one of the few offices that do have air conditioning.
So, in light of all that information, my plan is to go to the water slides next weekend and Switzerland next week. And then, maybe the stores will have products again and the weather won’t be so hot.

Hey, Jamie!
I hope that Switzerland treats you very well - and that you’ll be able to rest and enjoy the falling rain in the mountains.
When do you typically get onto Skype? I’d love to talk with you, if you have the time. I’ve heard so much about you that I’m becoming more and more stoked about becoming the second addition to single, white males in Malaga.
Stay cool!
peace,
nathandidlake
