It Came!

October 6th, 2006 · 3 Comments

A wise man once said; First, tell your audience what your going to tell them, second, tell them what you came to tell them, and then lastly tell them what you told them. Since then, that expression has been used so much it mostly falls on deaf ears. However, I don’t want to waste any of your time so here is what’s ahead: my emotions on receiving a new care package, what was in it, and the story behind each of the items (some of them are pretty good).

It’s been a week and a half since I got the last package from my mom and I feel a little bit ashamed a co-worker named Ian came up to my office to tell me that there was a package here for me. I was in disbelief. I had been anticipating it’s arrival for almost two-weeks at that point, but according to the online tracking it was not supposed to be here yet. At any rate I immediately jumped up from desk and ran to the Auditorium room with a big smile on my face only to find that everything I had been dreaming of and everything that had been told was true. I did indeed find a large box that was once filled with John Deere 1/64 scale toy tractors but was now filled with:

Things I bought.

  1. iPod Nano (1st Generation, not the new ones they list on the site.)
  2. Apple Shake
  3. Apple Mighty Mouse
  4. Apple MacBook

And things my Mom wanted to send me.

  1. Lady Speed Stick
  2. Some Canada Flag Patches
  3. A Canada Tie
  4. Breakfast Cereal
  5. Mini Coffee Crisp candy bars
  6. Other various snacks

The iPod Nano I have already sold. I currently have a perfectly good 20gb iPod that I use on a very regular basis and will continue to use until the hard-drive dies. It’s just that Apple had a promotion that if you bought a new computer they would give you a free iPod. I took advantage of that to help offset the cost of the new computer.

The Apple Shake is a video compositing software. I chose it because it is cheap and good and has a user interface that has won my heart. It should help bring our studios special effects abilities up a notch with great motion tracking and green screening abilities.

The Apple Mighty Mouse in the list was a bit of a goof-up. I had found myself in need of a new mouse here in Spain, and so I thought I would give ebay a try. I found what I was looking for at a price I was willing to pay. I checked that my billing and shipping infomation was correct and I purchased for myself a new Apple Mighty Mouse. I waited. I waited some more. And then finally I heard back from my mom that my new Mouse has shown up in Canada. I emailed the seller and asked why they shipped to my billing address instead of my shipping address and the only response I got was that I did not specify that I had wanted to ship to my shipping address. I never thought that I would have to specify that I wanted things shipped to my shipping address. Needless to say, but yet said I gave that seller a negative rating on the sale. And now after many months of waiting and the purchase of a different mouse it has finally found it’s way back to me.

The Apple MacBook is my first step into the world of mobile computing and I love it. The size and weight are great, the keyboard feels sharp, and it’s got a built in web-cam! Boy did I get a lot of use out of that thing in the first few days I had it (Skype just release a beta of Skype Video for Mac). Also of note, with this new laptop I am able to run Windows and Apple OSX and I intend to do it just because I can.

As for the things my Mom sent, there was a lot. I had requested that she send some Canada memorabilia and she did. I got Canada patches, a Canada tie, Canada Stickers, a Canada ceiling hanging thing, and other stuff. I am very appreciative of the fact that I can now be patriotic in ways other than singing the Canada National Anthem in front of a big group of fiesta go-ers (This is a story for another day). The snacks were also much aprecciated, I had entirely forgotten what Rice Krispie squares tasted like. And as for the Lady Speed Stick, my mom claims that that was an accident and it was a result of my sister doing the packing but I remain a little skeptical.

All in all September 26th, 2006 was a very good day, and my only regret is that it took me this long to write about it. That, and I am a little sad that I didn’t take any pictures of this event, it really felt photo worthy, but I was much too excited to go and get my camera and slow things down.

Let me know when the pictures are posted on Flickr as I would love to see them! And it was a lot of fun packing the items - I would’ve loved to send some Corn Chowder etc, but the joy of having a package arrive with some broken, smelly jars was not a chance I wanted to take.

And honestly - the Lady speed stick was an accident! But now that you have it, go ahead and use it. I’ll buy more…………….
