Science

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

If ever you talk to people about God, eventually you’ll come across someone who says that they don’t believe in God but in science. And honestly I believe that to be the biggest cop out there is. Firstly, who doesn’t “believe” in science? Science isn’t a religion and scientology is a cult. To say I don’t believe in Science would be at least as ridiculous as saying I don’t believe in gravity.

People like that need help.

So what is this science in which people put there trust? As best as I can figure it’s discovery of the order of the universe. Science can never and will never answer philosophical questions like why do I exist? where did everything come from? and my favorite; why something rather than nothing?

Even the fact that there is an order to the universe that we can study, to me, speaks volumes; if everything that exists happened by random chance, wouldn’t we have nothing but randomness to study? And how profitable to mankind would be the study of our completely selves. No. Order exists because it is made to exist, in every instance study-able you will find that when left alone things fall into a state of disarray. Growing up, my room would never become clean or organized just by leaving it to time and random chance.

Therefore, I pose that the fact that science is a fact points a tremendously obvious finger at intelligent design and would love to hear from anyone with a counterpoint. The more pertinent issue what there being a God indicates.

Musings and Upcoming Events - The Life Edition

Tuesday, February 27th, 2007

Life in Spain has had some ups and downs but mostly I have just noticed differences and in this edition of Musings and Upcoming Events I intend to focus on some of the differences between my life here in Spain and life back home.

Musings

Life has been everything I expected it to be and then some and as I do write what will probably be my last Musings while living in Spain I would like to share a few points on what it has been like from a practical point of view.

I Like Cars

I am tired of public transit. When I left Canada I really was excited to leave behind the cost of gas and car maintenance (my car hasn’t had an easy life) but at this point I think I would welcome smog and an empty wallet with open arms. Public transit has been a good friend and has gotten me to a lot of places in a very reliable fashion but I am tired of making trips by city bus and having to plan a whole hour just to get somewhere where if I had my own car I could have made the trip picked up the groceries and been back home in that same amount of time.

An Illegal Immigrant

For the first time in my life I actually fear the customs at border crossings and immigration offices. I knew that the law in Spain said that the longest stretch anyone can spend in Spain with out the proper paper work is three months and for that reason I have embarked on an international excursion every three months. What I didn’t know is that you are only allowed to be in Spain for a total of six months out of the year and I have definitely been in Spain for more then six months. I thought that all I needed was to show a plane ticket back home and that that would be enough, let’s pray that it is, I do intend to do a lot more traveling as an illegal immigrant before returning to Canada.

Musings and Upcoming Events - The Christmas Edition

Monday, December 4th, 2006

December 1st came and went. A lot happened. I didn’t realize this until I actually experienced it, but December 1st is the official day to turn on Christmas lights in Spain. I really wish I had realized this sooner for reasons that will be explained further along in the document. Anyway, last night I went downtown with some coworkers and spaniards like I do most every friday. We normally duck out early and head downtown to check out the scene, eat some food, and go to the comic book store (I have be going nearly 4 weeks in a row and I still don’t understand the comic book crowd) and then we break up around 9pm, some people go home, other people linger around downtown, and other go to congregate elsewhere.

Brandon and I were on our way to congregate at my place and watch a movie when I got a message from Kirsten saying that we needed to get on down to the Plaza de la Constitucion pronto! (They normally have cool stuff there I just didn’t think that anything would have changed since I was last there not more than 2 hours previous) Curious and intrigued we both decided that pronto sounds like fun and turned one hundred and eighty degrees around and journeyed to that place from which we just came.

Musings and Upcoming Events - The Rainy Edition

Wednesday, November 8th, 2006

It’s raining. It’s raining like it will never rain again. I have gotten quite used to the weather here on the south coast of Spain. It’s very predicable. All summer you could count on sun and hot, now it’s November and you just have to ask yourself wether it’s going to rain much or little today.

There’s a lot that I don’t like about the rain; I can’t do laundry because I have a place to dry it, it’s cold and depressing, everything I wear gets wet and dirty right away, and so forth, but on the positive side; the rain makes all the previously brown and dead plants really green, all the dog poo is getting washed out of the streets, and there’s rainbows every now and again, which make this weather all worth it.
